Understanding Paper Weight

When it comes to letterpress printing, choosing the right paper is essential. There are several different types of paper measurements that don’t exactly correlate with each other. You know, just to make things hard. Here’s a quick and dirty paper weight guide.

Weight in Pounds

Pounds is one of the most common paper measurements we use in the U.S. It refers to how many pounds 500 parent sheets (1 ream) weighs.  Text weight parent sheets are typically 25×38″, while cover weight parent sheet are usually 20X26″. That means that text and cover paper weights aren’t exactly measured on the same scale. Most of what we print for business cards, invites and posters are cover weights, while text weight comes in handy for letterhead and other marketing material.

Weight in Grams

GSM (g/m²) or grams per square meter is the paper weight in grams for 1 sheet that is 1×1 meter. This is more common outside of the U.S. It is a great system since it’s the same for every paper grade.

Thickness in Points

Point are a caliber measurement of the actual thickness of the paper. For example 44 pt chipboard measures at .044 inches thick.

Now that we’re in the thick of it, don’t give too much weight to anything.

While these measurements are helpful in comparing papers, keep in mind that the numbers don’t tell the whole story. There’s no numbers for smoothness or rigidity or can’t-live-withoutness.  For example heavier weight papers are often more rigid, but the material the paper is made of also comes into play. Contact us and we can help you explore the wide world of letterpress papers for your next project. We’re always happy to send along samples of papers that we have on hand for your hand to experience.  Whether you need thick, thin, cotton, handmade or recycled paper, we’ll help you find it. Then we’ll print the hell out of it for you.

Mohawk paper has a great conversion calculator that you can use to make any conversion you need to. You can crunch your paper numbers here.

A few weeks back I had a phone call here at the shop that started out a little ominous as the first question was “How much are business cards?” The answer clearly is “That depends.” After a few more questions and answers including me explaining what letterpress is and his declaring that he needed 2000 cards for his business I told him the price. To which he replied “What the F@&k? I can get 500 business cards for ten bucks at Vista Print!!!” My retort just happened to be “then you should go there.”

If cost is your issue then you should go somewhere that declares their costs to be the main selling point. I don’t eat Little Caesars pizza and haven’t in years. I have bought it for the kids cause cost is an issue with them and they are not going to enjoy the pricey delight that an artisan pizza maker is going to give us. I will happily spend $25 on a pizza that has given some thought to quality and ingredients and makes pizza like they care. (In fact, I would probably spend twice that if I wanted to impress my date.) But then I care about quality and realize that cheapness is just one selling point and not the be all end all.

GFP_5937

So why would you craft a letterpress business card and hand that out when each one may very well cost you as much as a dollar or more? Because you know that you get one chance to impress and as you wouldn’t take your date to Little Caesars, why would you give them the equivalent in a business card? But if you would be okay with bad pizza, you should go there. Leave the good stuff for the rest of us.

We end up having the discussion around here about once a week about how best to use the same vernacular as our clients when it comes to embossing, debossing and blind letterpress. Do we use the terms that the rest of America is using to describe what they are doing? Do we try and educate all comers? Do we write a blog post about it? Does anyone even read blogs anymore? It is more than 160 characters. So clearly unreadable. But here you go. Definitions. And Pictures.

Emboss. Raised letters. Pressed from the back side and up. Always leaves a deboss on the back side. So you get impression on both sides. One raised (emboss side), one pressed in (debossed side). Does that make sense?  Here are pictures that can give you what you need then.emboss_2

Deboss. Lowered or pressed in letters. Always going to have an emobssing on the other side. Basically exactly the opposite of the emboss.

Blind Letterpress. This is the one that we get most requests for. But most people call it a deboss or an emboss. This is exactly like adding a color to a letterpress piece. But instead there is just no ink. So it leaves an impressing pressed into the paper. But doesn’t press through the other side. Like a deboss/emboss would. We love doing this with the right design.

blind_1

All three of these are inkless design elements that you can add to a card to give you texture and feel that will push you through to the next level of greatness on a card or invitation. If you want some help in whether your design could use one of these elements, just give us a call. We geek out about this stuff.

As I was talking to a friend recently he told me that there was a new app that would make business card superfluous. Well. That is ridiculous. Them people have been trying to destroy the beautiful parts of this world for years. The folks who made almond butter have been trying to destroy peanut butter (this may actually not be true. I just made it up.) But in reality the world of the business card has never been more important. There are very few mediums where you can instantly give your branding to someone and give them a reason to remember you and contact you. For business purposes. Or other purposes actually.

I would argue that now more than ever we need a card that stands out and reinforces why someone should contact you. Sure, you could stand there and pull your phones out and connect on social media. Or swap phone numbers. But while you are holding a drink in your hand and walking around the room, talking to the strangers in your vicinity, why would you want your phone out? You don’t. You want to be present. And the only extra effort that you need is a slight reach into your pocket to pull out your perfectly branded business card. And that will make you stand out more in this muddled world of getting to know you.

I often say to folks that the best cards require someone to take a second glance. But also recognizable as a business card. You could go on very think paper. You could use letterpress. You could emboss or deboss. You could use bright colors. You could not include any contact info so they have to ask how to get ahold of you. You could duplex contrasting colors together. You could edge them. You could use Spot UV. You could have a card designed by Jessica Hische. You could have a card designed by your kids. You could have a die cut. You could literally do a million various things to make your brand and you stand out. But the point is, pulling out a phone and sending your contact info that way just muddles you up inside a contacts file. And you certainly don’t want that.

Do you?

Now. Ask how to get a hold of me.IMG_1410

So you want to letterpress on black paper. I don’t blame you it looks amazing. I mean. Look at these pictures of great letterpress cards all on black paper.IMG_1783 IMG_1797

We have some rules you should know first before you decide that it is for you. Listed below in convenient list format.

1. White ink does not look white on black paper. I know it seems like a great idea. White on black and all. And it is. Truly. But the ink that we use is oil based and will just soak into the black and fade away. It will be opaque and won;t stand out. It sort of turns into a muddy grey. And since that isn’t what you wanted, neither you or we will be happy. It isn’t white on black.
2. Pretty much any color ink will not show up on black paper. The same thing is true of the other colors that you love so much. Inks do not stand out on the black as the color that they purport to be.
3. The exception is metallic inks. Use them. Oh and varnish. And black ink. Look at all these amazing examples of inks and varnish that you can use.

IMG_1806
4. Foils are a great option for printing on black paper. Foil works great. It gets pressed into the paper as well and gives you the impression that you wanted and also shows up. Everyone wins. The only problem is that foil is not available in every color. But lucky for you there is a white foil option. And it is beautiful.
5. Screen printing is another great option to print on black paper. Look at these screen printed cards. The ink lays on top of the paper here and so can show up on the black and not become a part of the paper. You can see that it is raised a bit there so it also has a very cool texture.

IMG_1781
6. All of these rules apply to the edging that we do as well. Keep that in mind. Duly noted.

Now rules are of course made to be broken. If you have a concept that will turn out with a broken rule above. Do it! We love rule breakers. Just know that you need to understand the rules before you break them.

They don’t make wine like they used to. But Evan over at Ruth Lewandowski Wines isn’t like other wine makers. We printed up his card last week and on delivery we had a little wine tasting and educational field trip. Evan knows his shit. We had no idea the level of craft and dedication that Evan puts into his bottles. We are seriously huge fans of what this wine is. And what this wine isn’t. This is natural wine. Without all the minerals and chemicals that cheap winemakers are using to make your tongue feel happy and your wallet feel more full (think Mcdonalds, but for wine). These wines are perfect just they way they are. Hugged and loved by a man who knows what wine is and isn’t. These bottles are on great wine lists on great restaurants across the world. And we bought a few from a passionate man who does his work down the street. God, we love this town. IMG_9411 IMG_9413IMG_9439 IMG_9442 IMG_9447 IMG_9453 IMG_9459 IMG_9464 IMG_9466 IMG_9473 IMG_9483 IMG_9489 IMG_9498
